Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (or turkey/chicken/lentils)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or mozzarella/Colby Jack blend)
- 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (or tater tots, crescent dough, or cornbread batter)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or chopped pickles for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté diced onions and bell peppers until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar. Simmer for 5–10 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.
- Transfer meat mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread evenly.
- Top with shredded cheese and your choice of biscuit dough, tater tots, or other topping.
- Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes or until topping is golden and cheese is bubbly.
- Let casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley or chopped pickles if desired.
Notes
- Use freshly grated cheese for best melting quality.
- Fully drain the meat to avoid soggy casserole texture.
- This recipe is freezer-friendly before baking (leave off biscuit topping until ready to bake).
- To reheat, warm in a 350°F oven for best texture; microwave is fine for individual portions.
- Customize with mushrooms, corn, jalapeños, or different cheese blends.
